HUNTSVILLE, AL (March 30, 2009)-Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle updated residents on the City of Huntsville's aggressive plan to educate motorists and citizens on bicycle safety.
Mayor Battle was joined by City Administrator Rex Reynolds, Captain Rodney Baker of the Huntsville Police Department and other members of Huntsville's bicycling community to discuss the efforts aimed at improving bicycle safety and educating Huntsvillians on sharing the road.
"We hate to suffer tragedy, and the death of Sarah Chapman was a tragic thing to happen in our community," said Mayor Battle. "But through that tragedy has come awareness - and the City of Huntsville is utilizing every resource we have to make sure our motorists know how to share the road."
Mayor Battle outlined the steps the City of Huntsville has already taken to improve bicycle safety awareness, including:
Committing to more than 100 "Share the Road" signs, 50 of which have already been installed
Working the Huntsville's "Bicycle Safety Awareness Committee" to form a new bike plan for the City of Huntsville, including new bike paths and lanes on new roads
Filmed PSAs that have run on Huntsville One more than 4,000 times - and asked broadcast media to share that message as well.
Declaring May "Bicycle Safety Awareness Month" and hosting the Mayor's Inaugural Bike Ride on May 2, 2009.
Battle added that more work remains to be done and that the process of educating the public about sharing the road will be a continuous one.
"Sharing the road means saving lives - and that is what we are here to do," Battle concluded.
