The Interns are coming! City of Huntsville launches Intern Class 4 for Summer 2010
Successful internship program nears one year anniversary, local students are encouraged to apply

HUNTSVILLE, AL (April 20, 2010) - As summertime approaches, the City of Huntsville is looking for bright young men and women to serve as interns. Mayor Battle said, "Our interns are the next generation of Huntsville leaders. Our young people often have terrific ideas and offer a fresh prospective when it comes to city governance. I'm always looking for the next big idea for our city."

The student internship program will tentatively begin June 2nd and end July 23rd, 2010. The eight week program may benefit as many as fifty college students. The intern positions may be unpaid, temporary and without benefits.

The City of Huntsville looks forward to giving college students real world experience in their respective career field or academic discipline. "I wish I had this sort of chance to gain real world experience when I was coming along" says Mayor Battle. Fifteen city departments are looking for energized young people including Office of the Mayor, city Council, Legal, Finance, Clerk Treasurer, Planning, Human Resources, Traffic Engineering, Emergency Management Agency, Community Development, ITS, Engineering, General Services, Animal Services, and Natural Resources.

This summer marks the one year anniversary of the intern program.

Will Pylant, an intern with Intern Class I, calls the program a personally satisfying experience, saying, "Serving as an intern is challenging yet enormously rewarding work. No other internship gives you the opportunity to truly help someone on a daily basis."

The nature of work for interns differs from department to department but may include research culminating in written reports, task oriented projects and other special assignments. Interns will also benefit from first hand exposure to their local government.

Students should submit their applications online by April 30th.

The application and more information about the intern program are available on the Huntsville city website at hsvcity.com/intern.
