Mayor Spencer to recommend extending Veterans Museum's lease
Extended time would give 7 more years at current facility
Huntsville, Ala. --- At the City Council meeting on August 14th Mayor Loretta Spencer will recommend to the Council that the city of Huntsville extend the Alabama Center of Military History, Inc. lease for 5 years making the expiration date August 31, 2015.
"This museum is not only a historical tribute to our veterans, the displays were procured and built by local veterans," Mayor Spencer commented. "Its value as a memorial and an educational center is monumental."
Mayor Spencer met with representatives of the museum to discuss what would be in the best interest of both parties.

6 new courts bring hard court action to Huntsville Tennis Center
Facility is recognized as one of the elite in nation
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer, Huntsville Tennis Center Board of Control members and staff were joined by local tennis leagues to open 6 new hard courts at the Huntsville Tennis Center. Not wasting a minute of playtime, tennis enthusiasts began matches on the new hard courts as soon as the ribbon was cut.
The 6 new lighted hard courts were estimated to cost approximately $680,000. The actual completion costs, after landscaping will be $290,000. The city of Huntsville managed the project and completed some work in-house to facilitate a savings in construction costs.

Newest Shuttle Bus route serves western portions of the city
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer and the city's Parking & Public Transit Department launched the city's newest Shuttle Bus route which serves western portions.
The Research Park Route has stops in Cummings Research Park as well as Bridge Street Town Centre, Westside Centre, Wal-mart on University Drive and will link to the soon to open UAH intermodal center.
"This route links to the 11 existing Shuttle Bus routes to provide transportation to the new destinations from all areas of the city currently served by the system," Mayor Spencer stated. "Commuters, shoppers, students and others will have convenient access to this rapidly developing area of the city."

Event showcases variety of recreational opportunities
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer and the city's Recreation Services Department announced that the city's first Sports Fair will be held this weekend. The Sports Fair will be a one-stop shopping for individuals and families interested in finding out what sports are offered in Huntsville.

City begins campaign encouraging citizens to get in 92 hours of exercise in 92 days
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer and the city's Recreation Services Department announced the city's new exercise initiative, GET FIT Huntsville which begins June 1.
"I encourage people to get a work-out partner, make exercise a family activity, or get a group together and devote 1 hour each day to physical activity," Mayor Spencer commented. Restoration of water tower preserves historical landmark
Water tower dedicated to Dallas Mill and Lincoln Mill
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer, Councilman Mark Russell and Huntsville Utilities were joined by members of the Northeast Civic Association, Northeast Inter Community Council, Dallas-Lincoln Mill Village District Community Development Council and Lincoln Mill Village representatives in a dedication ceremony marking the completion of the historic water tower located on Dallas Street.
"The mills were the lifeblood of our community for so many years," Mayor Spencer stated. "Restoration of this historical landmark honors that heritage as well as gives us the ability to use the tower for water storage."

Super Retriever Series returns to Huntsville

Heart of Huntsville Drive provides additional downtown corridor
Project is completed at $119,548 under contract amount
Huntsville, Ala. --- Road work in Huntsville continues at a steady pace with 23 projects in active construction or under design to provide enhanced traffic movement through the city. Heart of Huntsville Drive opened after a ribbon cutting ceremony and the official first drive across the roadway by employees who have been involved in the project.
The road has been completed at a total cost of $1,559,468.69 which is $52,228 under the contracted amount. Cost of the bridge was completed with the total cost of $1,393,712.86 which also was $67,320.26 under the contracted amount.

Huntsville beats 11 cities to win "Horton Hears You" Hometown Challenge

Huntsville, AL --- Chances are if you were downtown last Saturday night you heard Huntsville's answer to 20th Century Fox's "Horton Hears You" Hometown Challenge. Approximately 500 people raised their voices to say, "We are here! We are here!"

2009 Quarter Midget of America Eastern Grands to be in Huntsville
More than 800 competitors from coast to coast expected
Huntsville, Ala. --- The quarter midget car race track on East Schrimsher will be a blur of activity next year with 7 days of championship racing. Mayor Spencer and the Huntsville Sports Commission (HSC) announced at a press conference today that the 2009 Quarter Midget of America Eastern Grands will be held in Huntsville July 19 - 25, 2009. It is anticipated that 800 to 1,000 competitors ranging in age from 5 to 16 will compete.

Huntsville ranked a top "Green City"
Popular Science magazine recognizes nation's best cities for environmental living
Huntsville, Ala. --- Huntsville's recognition as one of the country's most environmental cities was furthered today by Popular Science magazine in its listing of "America's Top 50 Greenest Cities".
Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Geographic Society's Green Guide, the study collected information on U.S. cities with more than 100,000 people. The categories analyzed were electricity, transportation, green living, and recycling and green perspective.

Alabama High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships in Huntsville this week
First time event for city
Huntsville, Ala. --- More than 500 high school wrestlers competed at the Von Braun Arena for state bragging rights. The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) announced last summer that its State Wrestling Championships would be held in Huntsville in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

At the public involvement meeting we discussed the upcoming Governors Drive widening, Phase II Project which will span from Gallatin Street to Bassett Street. During the meeting, an overview of the project was presented along with a public viewing of the construction plans.

"Chip In" event celebrates "Dog Spot's" opening
Huntsville, Ala. --- The Dog Spot is Huntsville's first dog park. This wonderful, off-leash doggie play area is the size of two football playfields. Conveniently located in Huntsville's downtown area, the dog park is on Cleveland Avenue by the skateboard park.

to complete widening of Old Madison Pike

Department of Transportation Director Joe McInnes that ALDOT has revised the Old

Turner Universal Construction Company partners with city of Huntsville's Community Development Department to boost Emergency Home Repair Program
 Mayor Spencer thanked the crew from Turner Universal Construction Company at the site of their first Emergency Home Repair project.

Huntsville, Ala. --- During 2006 a record number of volunteers assisted 91 homeowners in making needed exterior repairs. That record has already been surpassed with more than 900 volunteers assisting with 108 repair so far this year.
Turner Universal Construction Company has offered its assistance on a continuing basis to aid the city's Community Development Emergency Home Repair Program. Immediately, 16 jobs were moved up on the list with the company taking those projects to complete. [More Details]
Jahazy Rooks returns to Huntsville
as city's Director of Information Technology Services

Cell phones collected by Operation Green Team earn $5000 prize and more
Huntsville, Ala. --- The city of Huntsville's Operation Green Team was presented $5,000 at the national Keep America Beautiful Conference held in Memphis last week. The cash was the top national prize for the E-cycling Campaign held during KAB's Great American Cleanup. Across the nation 114 KAB affiliates participated in the campaign collecting a total of 2,338 old cell phones.
